The Physician Advisor in Health Care Quality and Management

The role of the physician advisor is evolving in today's health care systems. This course describes the role of the physician advisor in health care quality and management and the physician leadership roles that can be fulfilled throughout the care continuum. These roles include transitions of care support, interdisciplinary team management and communication, determining patient status and level of care, participating in Medicare appeals and medical necessity reviews, and many more facets impacting the quality of care patients receive.

At the conclusion of this activity, attendees should be able to:
Describe the roles and areas of potential influence for the experienced physician advisor.
Summarize the CMS requirements for Inpatient and Outpatient level of care.
Describe how the definition of observation services differs from inpatient status.
Explain the basic types of medical necessity reviews.
Evaluate CMS' Conditions of Participation requirements for issuing a Condition Code 44.
List and describe the main stages of the RAC Audit process.

Course/Activity Information

This course is intended for Physicians of all specialties, Nurses, and Other Health Care Professionals with appropriate CME / CE credit offered for each profession.

All participants must achieve a final assessment score of at least seventy percent (70%) for recertification and continuing education credits. You have 60 days to complete the course after ordering.

This activity is valid from May 2, 2023, through September 30, 2025.

About The Authors
David Gates, MD, is a former hospitalist and served as a Medical Director with Eagle Hospital Physicians in Atlanta, GA and Bon Secours Hospitals in Richmond, VA. Dr. Gates spent over 20 years as an Internal Medicine physician before becoming a full-time hospitalist. He now consults part-time while enjoying retirement in Arizona.

Hemant Gupta, MD, MSc., CHCQM-PHYADV, was previously the Medical Director and Lead Physician Educator at Sound Advisory Services. In this and previous roles, he was responsible for screening, recruiting, hiring, training, onboarding, education development, quality surveillance, IRR exam administering, feedback, and supporting all remote/onsite physician advisors, including performance improvement plans and metrics development. He provided content development (sample case reviews, education for UM/UR physician advisors, peer to peer content), retro-audits for CDI, status determinations, appeals education, quality surveillance, quality dashboard, and quality metrics development. Dr. Gupta has extensive knowledge in Medicare regulations and MCG/InterQual education as it pertains to hospital-level services.
