For most healthcare professionals, it is no secret that we are in the midst of urgent and complex opioid issues and problems. There are definitely professional practice gaps for providers and knowledge deficits for consumers. To address these issues, we must understand the professional practice gaps related to pain management, opioid prescribing, substance use disorders, and the support needed for transitions and care coordination. This course discusses these concerns and looks at education and treatment options to help address the opioid crisis. Participants will look at the elements of the NOPAIN Act passed at the end of 2022 and what are the next steps needed to support the implementation of the Act. The combination of multi-modal treatment options, integrating evidence-based best practices into healthcare professional education, supporting non-opioid treatment options, and stronger consequences for those who continue selling illicit opioids are shared. Through interprofessional collaboration, we can bring about change to this negative landscape and impact the negative consequences of opioid misuse.
At the conclusion of this activity, attendees should be able to:
Summarize the issues and concerns related to opioid misuse and abuse
Define the practice gaps related to treatment options and care coordination for this population
Relate to acute pain and chronic pain management
Evaluate multi-modal approaches to pain management
Review the components of the NOPAIN Act
