This course focuses on achieving organizational excellence through key principles and practices. Participants will delve into psychological safety, explore the Shingo Model, learn about Rules in Use for improving work processes, and harness the power of self-reflection. This course will present the core concepts of organizational excellence, drawing from the insights of the Paul O'Neill Trilogy, the importance of psychological safety, the principles outlined in the Shingo Model, and the implementation of Rules in Use for creating a learning organization. Paul O'Neill's philosophy emphasizes habitual excellence, rooted in safety, quality, and respect for individuals, alongside a commitment to continuous improvement.
Psychological safety is identified as a crucial element for fostering an environment of innovation and performance. The Shingo Model elucidates key principles guiding organizational excellence, stressing the alignment of purpose, systems, and behaviors. Rules in Use offer a structured approach to designing, operating, and improving work processes, emphasizing clarity, directness, and continuous learning. Reflection is highlighted as a powerful tool for individual and collective learning, facilitating a shift from mere execution to accelerated progress through iterative experimentation and collaborative learning cycles. This course encapsulates the essential components necessary for organizations to cultivate a culture of excellence, adaptability, and continual improvement.
At the conclusion of this activity, members of the interprofessional team should be able to:
Explain psychological safety, its four stages, and its importance to organizational excellence
Define principles and increase knowledge of the principles of organizational excellence
Increase knowledge of the Rules in Use, a.k.a. the principles for designing, operating, and improving work
Practice self-reflection using the Reflection Model

Course/Activity Information

This course is intended for Physicians of all specialties, Nurses, and Other Health Care Professionals with appropriate CME / CE credit offered for each profession.

All participants must achieve a final assessment score of at least seventy percent (70%) for recertification and continuing education credits. You have 60 days to complete the course after ordering.

Prior to joining Value Capture, Anthony coached at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health for five years. There he supported hospital operations, including inpatient nursing, perioperative services, the emergency department, guest services, and more. Anthony is passionate about helping healthcare executives, leaders, and team members solve problems and improve safety and outcomes.

Teams Anthony has coached have reduced readmissions for congestive heart failure and cirrhosis patients, decreased morphine usage and length of stay for neonatal abstinence syndrome infants, improved timeliness of discharges, and leveraged a real-time problem-solving system to resolve dozens of safety risks for patients, families, visitors, and staff.

Before serving in healthcare, Anthony was an operations leader at Alcoa, where he and his team achieved the organization's highest honor for permanently increasing plant production capacity and realizing greater than $1 million in annualized financial impact through safety improvements and increased uptime. Additionally, Anthony performed award-winning work in diversity, equity, and inclusion, helping to organize and host a global DEI summit, allying with the organization's LGBTQ employee resource group, and partnering with a local school district to provide support for minority STEM students. He also co-founded and served on the corporate leadership team of an employee resource group for new and advancing professionals, which grew to more than 400 members across facilities in six countries in its first year.
